This shavige uppittu or vermicelli upma is prepared using vermicelli, onion, tomato and few other spices. This is a very simple breakfast recipe and one can try during those lazy days. Instructions to make Shavige upma (vermicelli upma):
- In a pan take oil + mustard seeds+urrad dal + Channa dal + curry leaves + cashews + raisins + peanuts + ginger + chilli and sauté for awhile
- Now add a cinnamon stick + onion + green peas + turmeric and sauté well until onions are cooked.
- Now add 4 cups water + salt + jaggery + lemon and allow the water to boil.
- Once it’s boiled add roasted vermicelli + ghee to it. Boil in medium flame until vermicelli is cooked and water evaporates.
- Now add shredded coconut + coriander leaves and mix well. Let it cool for 15 minutes and then serve it.
This is Karnataka style dish, my brother in law is from Raichur, Karnataka that is only relation with Karnataka and visited Bangalore once. Shavige in kannada means vermicelli or kind of thin noodles. Even though there are two types of vermicelli are there one made with. In another broad pan, add oil. When oil is hot, add mustard seeds, followed by urad dal, channa dal & fry till the dals turns golden brown.
